Historically, Basilet was a Thudunish island, and had more dealings with Karak and even Cat than with Paladian. About 500 years ago, the Thudun of Basalat suffered a series of calamities in turn - civil war, volcanic eruption, plague, an angry necromancer, and an ill-considered confrontation with the fish men that destroyed maritime commerce. Eventually, most of the remaining Thudun abandoned Basilet for other lands.

Some generations later, the near-empty island was settled by an intrepid nobleman of Paladian, Dreck the Duke's Son of Novenshire. A large proportion of the colonists were of noble blood (younger children and the like) with the result that etiquette is of a high standard in Basilet, no entrenched class of peasantry has developed, and the local nobility are not taken entirely seriously, since most people are their second cousins.

Priests are respected in Basilet, but are not quite the power they are in Paladian or Koronad - few wanted to leave their comfortable homes when the island was being settled, and the Basiletians found they could get on reasonably well without them. Othermen are treated well, and though they are few in number, it is not uncommon to see Thudun or Lomen bringing their goods to market in the towns.
