Formerly an independent kingdom, this extensive land of savanna, forest, salt wastes and mountains forms one of the four outer Episiarchies. It is bounded to the east by the great mountains known as the Dragon's Bones, to the north by the Hashab peninsula and the two great bays of Malash and Maktab, to the west by the rivers Malash and Blil, and to the south by the Survan Hills and the wooded land of Quelia. The heartland of Kitaba is the valley of the Maktab, in which is built the ancient capital of Huktab, and the jezirah formed by the Maktab's junction with the Kesh. The forested lands to the southeast belong mostly to the Asjhadis, who although Kitaban speaking and historically usually subservient to the Kitabans, have different traditions and national aspirations. At one time the Kitaban kingdom controlled not only the present Episiarchy, but the outlying baronies of Hasaba and Karad and great tracts of the Episiarchies of Husyfra, Imarxes, and Quelia. Kitaba today is divided into a number of Baronies ruled by imported Tixrynish nobility. These tend to be of large extent, to provide a large enough tax base for the required palaces, garrisons, and prisons.
