Word on the streets...

is that Chapter 10 is finally up. Check it out and marvel at what I think may be the longest paragraph I have ever written.

Good stuff! Poor old Bey: not exactly an idiot, but his judgement needs a bit of a stretch and a couple of star jumps. Poor fella.

I boldly predict he'll have a bit more of a clue in the rewrite, or he'll get cut altogether. He more or less occupies the central protagonist role, so he should definitely do *something*. He's the main casualty of the "making it all up as I go along" approach, unfortunately.

I just realised this morning that really, I'm writing two separate stories with largely independent themes/points here, and what I maybe should do when I go back to the start is split them out. And give a bit more life to the setting, which is suffering from my usual extremely sketchy worldbuilding.

Certainly, if I'm going to use a fantasy city, it should have a sufficiently distinctive character to justify its existence. I'm looking at Mieville's New Crobuzon and Neal Stephenson's depiction of the real 17th century London, and Fellport looks decidedly insubstantial by comparison.
